Wilson Center for the Arts 11901 Beach Blvd Jacksonville, FL 32246 Special Events Tuesday, April 9, 2013 @ 7:00pm, Lobby doors open at 6:00pm Exhibit Opening with Guest Speaker: Dr. Alfred Balitzer, Chairman of the Foundation for California and Advisor to the Simon Wiesenthal Center Sunday, April 12, 2013 @ 1:00pm Survivor Mr. Fred Naftalie Share his experiences 1:00pm- A screening of Chuck Olin’s film “In Our Own Hands,” the story of the Jewish Brigade Group of the British Army of World War II 2:45pm- Jewish Brigade Group member Fred Naftalie will be available for a post-film discussion of his experiences. The event is moderated by Dr. Dirk Wendtorf, Professor of Humanities and Holocaust Educator. Thursday. April 18, 2013 @ 6:00pm Ms. Rawlslyn Francis, Professor of English: Exploring a Holocaust Survivor’s tale through the comic genre In the memoir, Maus I and II: A Survivor’s Tale, the cartoonist Art Spiegelman shares his journey to accept his father’s terrifying story of survival and history itself. In this session, Professor Francis will lead a discussion in examining how Spiegelman artfully utilizes the cartoon format to provide an unconventional method of allowing readers to confront the horrors of the Holocaust through the deceptive innocence of a comic. Sunday, April 21, 2013 @ 1:00pm Mr. Patrick Nolan, Holocaust Educator Ethics and the Concept of Humanity in the Holocaust This event opens with “Out of the Ashes,” a film based on the true story of Giselle Perl, a Jewish-Hungarian doctor who manages to survive Auschwitz. Following the film, Mr. Nolan will lead a discussion about the Holocaust. Mr. Nolan is one of the two faculty members in Duval County Public Schools who teaches a semester-long course devoted exclusively to the study of the Holocaust.
