Holocaust exhibit to be unveiled today
“The Courage to Remember,” a traveling exhibit about the Holocaust from the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Museum of Tolerance, will be unveiled during a special ceremony today at 4 p.m. on the upper level of Westfield Countryside Mall, 27001 U.S. 19 in Clearwater. The exhibit includes 200 Holocaust photographs along with historic references, and has been displayed in 20 countries. The exhibit is free and will be open to the public through Sept. 27 during mall hours: 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon-6 p.m. Sunday.
Sheriff candidates will debate today
WTAN 1340-AM will air a debate at 10 a.m. today between Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, the Republican incumbent, and Democrat Scott Swope, a lawyer from Palm Harbor who served as a Pinellas County deputy as well as a traffic magistrate. Best kids’ business plan wins $10,000
Business-savvy high school juniors and seniors can win $10,000 through the Pinellas Education Foundation and software company FairWarning’s Next Generation Entrepreneurs program. The year-long business plan competition will include creativity workshops and mentoring. The top 10 finalists will receive $250 to help them develop their plans. The winning team or individual receives $10,000 to start a real business. Two hearings on budget this month
The Board of County Commissioners will hold two public budget hearings this month before final passage of the 2012-2013 county budget, on Thursday and Sept. 18. Both public hearings will be held at 6 p.m., following the commission’s regular meeting at 2 p.m. The hearings will be held in the fifth-floor assembly room of the Pinellas County Courthouse, 315 Court St. in downtown Clearwater. Blue Jays take on Lakeland tonight
Join the Dunedin Blue Jays today as they help kick off the 2012 Florida State League playoffs. The team takes on the Lakeland Flying Tigers in game two of the first round series. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.; first pitch is at 6:30. Tickets cost $6, with kids 12 and under able to enter free with a paying adult. The first 300 fans receive a free team photo, and one fan will win a new iPad. There will also be a chance to win a free movie ticket to the Cobb Theatre at Countryside Mall.
